NSR Gymnasts Shine at National Championships

It was a banner weekend for North Shore Rhythmic gymnasts and coaches.

At the Visa national championships in Saint Paul Aug. 17-20, the club – which trains gymnasts in Glenview and in Deerfield -- picked up the senior all-around title and two senior event titles, two junior event titles, and the coach-of-the-year award. NSR athletes earned one spot on the senior national team (for athletes ages 16 and older), three spots on the junior national team (for athletes ages 13 through 15), and the all-around title for athletes 12 and under.

Shelby Kisiel of Missouri City, Texas – winner of the senior all-around and two senior event titles (clubs and ball)

Jazzy Kerber of Highland Park, Ill. – winner of two junior event titles (hoop and ribbon)

Summer Camp Fun!

This summer dozens of kids are getting top-notch training in rhythmic gymnastics -- and also participating in traditional summer-camp activities such as swimming -- at the North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center in Glenview. The girls are mastering the Olympic sport's body movements (such as pirouettes, leaps, and balances) and learning to combine them with equipment (the ball, the hoop, the ribbon, and the clubs).

Rhythmic Gymnasts Win Medals -- and Meet Minnie Mouse

North Shore Rhythmic gymnasts won medals -- and met Minnie Mouse -- during the Junior Olympic Championships and the U.S. Rhythmic Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando on June 8-12.

Minnie helped pass out many of the awards and also posed for pictures. In fact, she was enjoying herself so much that she did not want to leave when her Disney helper indicated it was time to go.

In the U.S. Rhythmic Classic, an international competition with gymnasts from countries such as Spain, Venezuela, and Argentina, North Shore Rhythmics' Shelby Kisiel and Jazzy Kerber won the senior and junior all-around titles and its U.S. senior national group won two silver medals.

Viva, Las Vegas!

North Shore Rhythmics gymnasts recently gave Las Vegas visitors a great alternative to playing the slot machines. Who wouldn't rather see talented athletes perform complicated leaps and pirouettes, while expertly handling hoops, balls, clubs, and ribbons?

And indeed, families and fans turned out on January 14-16 to watch girls in levels 8 through 10 compete at the first Las Vegas Invitational Tournament.

After the competition, many gymnastics families also visited local sights, including the Hoover Dam, the free fountain show at the Bellagio, and the Cirque du Soleil.

¡Felicitaciones!

The USA just won eight medals at the 2010 Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico -- and North Shore Rhythmics gymnasts made several of those trips to the podium.

Over the first weekend in December, the U.S. group -- which trains at North Shore Rhythmics -- won silver medals for its five-hoop and three ribbons-and-two-hoops routines. (Group members include Jessica Bogdanov, Megan Frohlich, Michelle Przybylo, Sofya Roytburg, and Sydney Sachs.) And Shelby Kisiel, also with North Shore Rhythmics, won fourth all around and silver in ribbon.

This competition marks the first time in 15 years that the U.S. group made it to the Pan American Games.

Congratulations to the girls and the North Shore Rhythmics coaches!

Hello, World(s)! In September the USA Senior National Group, which trains at North Shore Rhythmics, competed at the 30th annual Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships. NSR’s group competitors: Jessica Bogdanov, Stephanie Flaksman, Megan Frohlich, Michelle Przybylo, Sofya Roytburg, and Sydney Sachs. NSR’s JoAnna Arnold and Shelby Kiesel competed in the individual competition. Congratulations to the gymnasts and to NSR and national team coaches Natasha Klimouk, Dani Takova, and Angelina Yovcheva!

Visa National Championships 2010

Congratulations to North Shore Rhythmics gymnasts! Fifteen NSR girls traveled to the Visa National Championships in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 13-14.

The following nine club members competed as individuals: JoAnna Arnold, Emily Barnett, Sharon Dassouli, Caitlyn Hillier, Jazzy Kerber, Shelby Kisiel, Jennifer Rokhman, Monica Rokhman, and Laura Tutunikov.

In addition, the six members of the USA senior national group, which trains at North Shore Rhythmics, performed four routines at the competition. The following six girls comprise the group: Jessica Bogdanov, Stephanie Flaksman, Megan Frohlich, Michelle Przybylo, Sofya Roytburg, and Sydney Sachs.

Young NSR Gymnasts Meet Vera Sessina

After judging at the international Chicago Cup on June 26-27, Russian rhythmic legend Vera Sessina spent the week at the North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center gym in Deerfield. She worked with U.S. national team members and also met with younger gymnasts (see below).

Hundreds of hours practicing pirouettes and leaps paid off for North Shore Rhythmics gymnasts at the USA Gymnastics regional competition in Minnesota last weekend.

The top finishers--who included nearly two dozen level 5-9 gymnasts from NSR--will compete in the annual Rhythmic Junior Olympic Optional Championships June 23-26. "J.O.'s" will be held in Chicago's Broadway Armory Park June 23-26, leading up to the international Chicago Cup June 26-27. See link for more information:

North Shore Rhythmics in France and Russia!

Go, USA! Over the past few weeks, North Shore Rhythmics U.S. national team members represented the United States in competitions in France and in Russia. On March 25-29, members of the U.S. national senior group--Megan Frohlich, Michelle Przybylo, Sofya Roytburg, Sydney Sachs, and Marlee Shape--competed in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Grand Prix in Thiais, France. And then on April 3, they qualified for the finals in the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup in St. Petersburg, Russia. JoAnna Arnold, Jazzy Kerber, and Shelby Kisiel competed in the individual competition in St. Petersburg.

Talk about a Rocky Mountain high! North Shore Rhythmics gymnasts are more than 6,000 feet above seat level in Colorado Springs, where they're competing at USA Gymnastics's 2010 Rhythmic Invitational and Challenge Feb. 12-14.

The NSR girls, levels 7 through 10, are also checking out the U.S. Olympic Training Center facilities and sightseeing at places like the Cave of the Winds.

North Shore Rhythmics Gymnastics Center competitors migrated south--temporarily--for the Suncoast Sports Festival on Jan. 22-24. The U.S. senior national rhythmic gymnastics group and girls in levels 9 and 10 performed in front of judges and fans. Karate and artistic gymnastics events were going on simultaneously in the same arena.

World Championships in Mie, Japan

The United States’ Senior Rhythmic Gymnastics National Group team recently returned from the World Championships in Mie, Japan, after the country’s best group performance since 2002. “World championships in Japan was by far the best experience I ever had,” said Marlee Shape, a member of USA Gymnastics’ senior national group. ”We gave it everything we had. We were very happy about how we performed, and we hope to keep doing well."

Competing for the USA was North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center’s Stephanie Flaksman of Northbrook, Ill.; Megan Frohlich of Marysville, Wash.; Kristin Kaye of Northbrook, Ill.; Sydney Sachs of Deerfield, Ill.; Sofya Roytburg of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; and Marlee Shape of Buffalo Grove, Ill. The USA finished 16th all-around with a score of 44.325. Italy earned the all-around title, followed by Belarus and Russia.

“Being in Japan, competing in that huge arena, along with all those other countries, was one of the great moments in my entire life,” said USA group member Megan Frohlich.

North Shore Rhythmics’ Ava Gehringer, who decisively won the all-around gold medal and every individual gold medal at the Visa National Championships in August, represented the United States at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Mie, Japan, in September. “Japan was quite an experience,” says Gehringer. “The moment we got off the bus from the airport, we were greeted by a long line of preschool-age Japanese children, who gave us handmade fans as good-luck presents.”

Ava placed 34th in the all-around rankings with a score of 70.975. “The actual competition went about as well as I could ask for,” says Gehringer. “I trained all year for it, and it paid off well in the end.”

Immediately after the World Championships, Ava started her freshman year at New York University.
